You Gotta have Money in the Bank, Frank was performed by the Sutton Hill Players at the local Carnival. The show follows the relationship between a landowner who lives in a cash register and a peasant couple whose house is a rent book. The owner cons the couple into working on his land and then buying from him the food they have grown. The owner has hoarded his money in a huge cooking pot. The couple push him into the pot with his cash, start cooking and sing ‘Money is the root of all evil! The process of creating this play involved many weeks of inventing scenes improvised from ideas and experiences within the group, such as renting a home, looking for a job, eviction, industrial accidents, apprenticeships and so on. Gradually, the theme of ‘conning’ emerged, the many situations where people trick, swindle and cheat each other. In the end, we settled on the ways in which workers are cheated by their landlords.
