The Sutton Hill Nursery Play (1976)

This outdoor performance at the Sutton Hill May Day Celebrations in 1976 was part of a successful campaign for a Sutton Hill Nursery School.
The play sets out to show how much a Nursery School is needed, particularly when Mum and Dad are both at work. In this scene, Gran is disturbed while watching her favourite TV show. She is not sure how to respond to her grand- daughter’s drawings. So Gran dismisses them as ‘scratchings’. Our workshops emphasise a process where group members can share and explore their ideas and experiences. Sometimes, they have been linked to a particular campaign, as in this play about the need for a Sutton Hill Nursery School. More often than not, the plays say something about the subjects that concern working class people, such as money, jobs, schools, housing, health and community resources.
