In this photograph of the May Day Celebrations, a curious and admiring audience are captivated by the spectacular skills of the Great Indians Dancers.
People living on Sutton Hill came from many different parts of the world so Salopians, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Cockneys. Geordies, Brummies, West Indians and Asians were all represented in our programme of events and in the market stalls.
Our policy was to ensure that our community celebrations were always ‘about something’. That’s why we chose May Day, the day when pre-industrial farm workers took the day off and celebrated. It was also the day selected by the nineteen century factory workers as their Labour Day annual holiday.
