St George of Sutton Hill (1976)

This street performance was performed by the Sutton Hill Players at the Sutton Hill May Day Celebrations of 1976. In the play, St George of Sutton Hill bravely combats both the Dragon of Apathy and the Slasher from the landlords, the Telford Corporation. In this scene, the Doctor orders the defeated Telford Slasher to ‘trundle back to Priorslee Hall’. St George of Sutton Hill is based on the medieval Mummers Play which was performed in England to celebrate the coming of Summer. It was also traditionally an opportunity for workers to lampoon the rich and privileged.
