This play was developed by Malinslee Drama Group, with many new members joining the group, some of whom lived in a nearby homeless hostel. We started by exploring characters and then looked for a dramatic situation which might bring them and their experiences together. The idea of the metaphorical human scrap-heap emerged. What makes people feel like scrap? What are the attitudes they are up against? Who is on the heap and who isn’t, and why? How can we resist being called and treated like scrap?
More than 20 people contributed to the project, not only devising the play but also the songs, which were sung and chanted without accompaniment. It was performed at the community centre on Malinslee housing estate.
The TCA worker on this project was Cathy Mackerras
