Memories of Madeley Carnival Procession(1987)

The theme of this processional event was the lighting up of memories of old Madeley. ‘I suddenly saw this amazing anarchic mass bouncing towards me down the hill, with enormous lanterns all lit, big flags, banners and music. It was huge’. The procession ended up in the centre of Madeley, coinciding with the annual ceremony of switching on the Christmas lights. This was the culmination of workshops where groups shared their memories of old Madeley and then made effigies and lanterns to carry in the procession. The event was followed by a rollicking Barn Dance at the Old Barn Hall.
